Light Bearers

We are the Light Bearers,

we carry firelight in our bones,

our sinews resonate with its pulse, our blood dances

to its beat.

And we are Lights’ super-spreaders, yet hide

under a bushel, snuffing it out when

trouble comes, turning it down to

soften the blow.

Still, we are the Light Bearers, our crest emblazoned

with it, our eyes scorched by it. We can no longer see

without it, so gloriously dependent

upon its glow.

Shall we keep silent when the world plunges into darkness?

Will we set our Light in a bottle and hide it

under the mattress—or will we

set it free and firework the heavens?

For we are the Light Bearers,

carrying firelight in our bones,

our sinews resonating with the pulse of it, our blood dancing

to the beat of it.
